Enola Holmes: A Review

Delia But, IX F

Have you watched “Enola Holmes” with Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill? If you haven't, you should definitely watch it. The movie is based on the Young Adult novel series by Nancy Springer, “Enola Holmes” and it was released on 23 September 2020 on Netflix. The film is directed by Harry Bradbeer, and the screenplay was written by Jack Thorne, who adapts the first novel of Nancy Springs’s mystery series. In the mystery film starring Millie Bobby Brown, Enola Holmes is the teenage sister of the famous Victorian-era Sherlock Holmes. Alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill stars as Sherlock Holmes, Sam Clafflin as Mycroft Holmes, Louis Partridge as Tewksbury and Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes.

The story begins on Enola’s sixteen birthday, when she finds out that her mother has disappeared, leaving behind only some gifts. The girl wants to find her mother, so a week later, she meets her brothers Mycroft and Sherlock. Sherlock finds her intelligent, whereas Mycroft finds her troublesome, and as her legal guardian, intends to send her away to a finishing school run by the stern Miss Harrison.

After hearing that her brother wants to send her to the finishing school, she runs away from home to find her mother. Enola takes a train dressed as a boy, and there she meets Tewkesbury, who was on the run as well. She discovers that on the train was a criminal who wanted to murder Tewkesbury, thus they both jump off the train. Tewkesbury forages for edible plants and fungi, and the two return to London and part ways.

Disguised as a proper Victorian lady, Enola continues to trace Eudoria, leaving cryptic messages in the newspaper's personal advertisements. Enola discovers pamphlets and a safe house containing explosives, and learns that Eudoria is part of a radical group of suffragettes. She is attacked by Linthorn, the murderer who was following Tewkesbury, who interrogates her about the boy. She fights back, ignites the explosives in the safehouse and escapes. Enola decides to find Tewkesbury again, to save him from Linthorn. She visits the Tewkesbury estate to learn more, meeting Tewkesbury's grandmother. Meanwhile, Mycroft has Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard search for Enola. After Enola is caught and sent to the finishing school, she escapes with the help of Tewkesbury.

I won’t tell you how it ends because you have to watch it yourselves! In 2022, a sequel was released with the return of Cavill, Brown, Partridge and Bonham Carter in their roles. The distribution also includes David Thewlis as Grail, Himesh Patel as Dr Watson, and Hannah Dodd as Sarah. The movie is directed by Harry Bradbeerand written by Jack Thorne

In this sequel, we see Enola starting her new detective agency. A factory girl who was looking for help to find her sister goes to Enola to get it. Enola, on her way to find the girl's sister, finds out many truths that lead her to a criminal who kills workers from the factory with white phosphorus. She meets Tewkesbury and they confess their love for each other.

I wholeheartedly recommend you watch both films if you like detectives, murder mysteries and seeing many of your favourite actors!
